Hello TVSD families,

We have updated the website to include information on how 4th marking period grades will be calculated. The grading system and other information can be found on the TVSD Continuity of Education website under Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Here is the grading update for 4th marking period grades:

For the 4th Marking Period we will be using a modified Pass/Fail grading system. The grading system differs at each level.

Kindergarten through 6th Grade:

In the absence of traditional assessment data, our focus will be providing instructional feedback to the students to move their learning forward. In our online learning environment, we will not be assessing as we normally have done in the past. Rather than using our standards-based 4-point scale we will be using 3-Proficient, 1-Minimal, and Incomplete. When reporting 4th Quarter scores, report cards will reflect engagement in the learning process and continued progress toward PA state standards.

A score of 3 will be given to students who to the best of their ability engaged in the learning process and demonstrated continued progress toward PA state standards.

A score of 1 will reflect minimal engagement and progress toward PA state standards.

A score of Incomplete will reflect no engagement and no progress toward PA state standards.

At the middle school, the 5th and 6th grade grading system will be the same as the elementary grading structure though classes may use assessments as checks for understanding.


Grades 7 through 12:

The 7th and 8th grade will be structured like the high school using a modified Pass/Fail grading system based upon completion of assignments.
Report cards will reflect three grading outcomes: Pass - 100%, Fail - 60%, and No Credit - 0%.

A grade of 100% would be for any student who completes most assignments, responds to feedback, and works toward proficiency. This grade, when averaged with the student’s other marking period grades, would ensure that the student passes the course, while acknowledging the work completed in the previous marking period(s).

A grade of 60% would be for any student who completes half of the assignments but does not meet the standard for a grade of 100%. Any teacher issuing a 60% to a student would be required to document multiple attempts to work with the student and their family toward assignment completion. This grade, when averaged with the student’s other marking period grades, would ensure that a student who had a passing grade prior to March 13 would also pass the course.

A grade of 0% would be reserved for students who complete less than half of the assigned work. Any teacher issuing a 0% to a student would be required to work closely with the student’s counselor, learning support teacher (if relevant), and principal; any student receiving a 0% would have many documented intervention attempts. The 0% would ensure that a student fails the course.

Although our school buildings will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, students will continue their online learning experience that began on April 2, 2020. Online learning will continue for students through the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. We will provide information regarding what the last day of school will be in the near future.

Dear Twin Valley School District families,

This afternoon, we were informed that Governor Wolf announced the closing of all K-12 schools and programs, public and private, through the end of the 2019-2020 school year. Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts, Head Start Supplemental Assistance Programs and Preschool Early Intervention programs will also remain closed, and institutions of higher education are prohibited from offering in-person instruction. Information will be forthcoming regarding graduation and end of school year events. After the school closure is lifted we will schedule an opportunity for students to pick-up personal items from their lockers as well as art projects and non-essential items. Please continue to stay safe and united we will meet the challenges together.

Dear Twin Valley School District Families,
As reports of local COVID-19 cases touch closer to home, we are writing to let you know that we have been made aware of one positive case of coronavirus within our school population.

Though local public health officials continue to be the authority in identifying positive cases and investigating close contacts, we are communicating this positive case to be transparent in this time of uncertainty and to provide what information we can as a school district. Due to the timing of the patient’s symptoms it is believed that the virus was contracted after the school closure. The Pennsylvania Department of Health was notified by medical professionals as per proper protocol.

It is important for our community to understand that the identification of positive cases does not change our local strategies for preventing and reducing the spread of disease. Social distancing is key in reducing the spread of COVID-19. If you must leave the house for essentials, remember social distancing includes maintaining a distance of 6 feet from others.

Coronavirus symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath. If you experience these symptoms, please call your healthcare provider and follow their advice. Practice good hand hygiene, cover your cough, and routinely clean frequently touched surfaces with household cleaners. Routine use of these measures by everyone will decrease the spread of viruses and respiratory diseases in our community.

Dear Parents,
First and foremost, we hope this letter finds you and your family well and safe. We would like to thank you for your dedication and patience as we navigate through this challenging and unprecedented situation.

In the next few days, the district will be implementing the plan to begin online learning for our students.
Thursday, April 2  Online instruction orientation for students and staff 
 Friday, April 3 Online exploration and review for students and staff

Next week’s schedule will be as follows:
Monday, April 6   Online instruction begins 
 Tuesday, April 7  will be a FULL day of school (now ½ day on calendar)
 Wednesday, April 8  will be a FULL day of school (snow make up day)
 Thursday, April 9  will be a HALF day of school (snow make up day)
 Friday, April 10  will remain a HOLIDAY
 Monday, April 13  will remain a HOLIDAY


The 3rd marking ends on April 9, 2020 for the Twin Valley Middle School and Twin Valley High School so that students can submit make-up work. Report cards will posted April 24th for the 3rd marking period.

The 3rd marking period will reflect our previous grading practices and the 4th marking period will reflect a pass or fail grade per course if school does not resume.

Grade level schedules will be posted on each buildings’ website by Wednesday, April 1.
We would like to once again thank you for stepping up to help make this unprecedented instruction program available for our students. We understand that navigating this challenging time has not been easy for anyone. By working together, we will be able to provide the best possible services for every one of our 3,100 students.

We will be sure to inform you if any changes or adjustments are made to this plan. We continue to keep you updated as things change, just this afternoon Governor Wolf announced that schools are closed indefinitely. We have no additional information at this time.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our hope is this communication finds you and your family in good health. We would like to thank you for your patience and support over the past two weeks as we continue to work through these unprecedented times. We understand this is a challenging time for families as we all navigate social distancing, business and school closures and the associated concern of COVID-19. Please don’t think for a minute that the district staff isn’t working diligently to provide the best possible services for each and every one of our 3,100 students.

As you are aware Governor Wolf announced on March 23, 2020, that Pennsylvania Public Schools will remain closed through April 9. Since Friday, April 10 and Monday, April 13 are holidays for our District we plan to resume classes April 14 and end the 2019-20 school year on June 18. In the event the closure is extended in an effort to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus these dates will change.

We are aware that surrounding districts have made the decision to pivot to online instruction. These districts have chosen to use some of their remaining instructional days to have their teachers instruct online rather than save these days for face-to-face instruction should schools be allowed to open. In summary, Twin Valley has not transitioned to an online learning environment for several primary reasons:

• We value our staff and the experiences students receive in our classrooms.
• We have maintained contractual work days so that our staff, such as: teachers and aides would be available to instruct in their regular classrooms when school would reopen
• We understand that by extending the school year our students would receive instruction by making up the missed school days.
• We know the best educational opportunities for our students are achieved by direct involvement with their teachers and peers in a setting that is conducive to learning with the appropriate technology and supplemental resources.
• We respect the efforts required by our regular education teachers, special education teachers, speech therapists, behavior support specialists, psychologists, guidance counselor, reading specialists, reading support teachers, coaches, librarians and nurses, to provide instruction that meets all student’s needs and complies with FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education) regulations.
• We understand there are some confusing messages regarding FAPE but know that during the school closure FAPE remains a legal requirement for all school districts and every students needs must be met.
• We hope by providing families with the links for multiple Engagement and Enrichment Resources on our website these have been beneficial and provided an opportunity for some quality family experiences.

In the event that the closure is extended through the end of April, we have been preparing and planning to transition to instruction online. This will include required engagement and formal teaching that is similar to what occurs in a classroom setting while students learn new concepts that are aligned to grade level standards. In addition, we are in the process of disseminating Chromebooks as needed in the event we must move to online instruction. On Tuesday, March 31 and April 7 we will have our teachers touch base with their students through an online format to finalize the concept of online instruction. Specific and detailed information will be forthcoming. If the school closure is extended beyond April 14, 2020 we will be prepared to offer effective online learning for our students. If, after receiving the additional information you have questions, please reach out to your school principal.

We are continuing breakfast and lunch meals next week as well as the following week. We will be providing breakfast and lunch bulk package meals on Tuesday, March 31 and Tuesday, April 7 at one of our following building locations: Robeson Elementary, Twin Valley Middle School and Honey Brook Elementary. Meals will be available from 11:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m.

Governor Wolf announced today that the Pennsylvania school closures will continue for students through Wednesday, April 8th and students will be permitted to return to school on Thursday, April 9th.

In addition he stated that the closure order could be extended if necessary to save lives and stop the spread of COVID-19.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I would like to thank our students, teachers, support staff, parents, Board members, and administration for all of their efforts and feedback during this very challenging time. We will continue to put forth our best effort to communicate pertinent information as it becomes available. We appreciate your patience as we continue to work together on the challenges ahead of us.

Last week we monitored the updates about the Coronavirus (COVID-19) from Governor Wolf as well the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). On Thursday, March 19 we received confirmation from PDE that all PSSA testing and Keystone exams for the 2019-20 school year have been cancelled. This includes the Pennsylvania Alternate System of Assessment (PASA). In addition, the College Board has announced the development of a new, at-home testing option with two different testing dates for AP testing. More details are expected by April 3. The College Board is also developing free live and on-demand AP courses that can be accessed remotely. More information is available at https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/coronavirus-updates.

Our teaching staff is currently engaged in professional development activities including curriculum writing and Schoology webpage development. We must continue to follow FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education) regulations by not teaching online but for everyone’s convenience we have posted on our website www.tvsd.org activities that students can do at home by using Twin Valley Engagement and Enrichment Resources. We will continue to monitor FAPE regulations and our ability to teach online. This evening, you will receive a brief survey so we can poll the community on students’ access to technology at home.

Effective Tuesday, March 24th we are continuing breakfast and lunch meals but in a bulk package. Each bulk package will contain breakfast and lunch meals for March 24 through March 27th and may be picked up by families that have registered at one of our following building locations: Robeson Elementary, Twin Valley Middle School and Honey Brook Elementary.

We expect to hear later this week an announcement from Governor Wolf on whether the school closure will be extended beyond March 27th. We are also currently planning for the possibility of a Phase 2 for longer closures in case that should occur. Our custodians will start summer cleaning activities in preparation of a shorter summer cleaning window if school is extended to the end of June.

Please continue to check our FAQ document on our website for the most recent updates about closures and changes in school programming. These are unprecedented times, and there may be additional challenges ahead for our schools, families and communities. Please know that we will continue to work on behalf of our students on issues that we are and could be confronting during the remainder of the school year.

Dear Twin Valley Parents and Guardians,
In coordination with all Berks County School Districts Twin Valley will be closed beginning on March 16 through March 27 due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). This includes all transportation to district schools, all non-public schools, private schools, and BCTC.

The closure will affect programming at all schools, including all before- and-after school activities, all athletic and extracurricular practices, competitions, weekend events, and community events. All events and activities are canceled.

Additional information will be sent out over the next few days from the principals with details concerning academic learning options for students.

Dear Twin Valley Parents and Staff,

In light of recent events and the ongoing information surrounding the Coronavirus in Pennsylvania, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the current status of the Twin Valley School District.

Yesterday Governor Wolf ordered the closing of all Montgomery County schools. It is possible that, in the near future, he may also order the closure of Berks County schools. We are developing plans to be prepared in the event this would happen. We are in constant communication with other Berks County School Districts to help coordinate our efforts.

Our administration and staff are developing learning activities for our students to access should there be a mandated closure. Our goal is for these supplemental activities to be used by our students to maintain current academic levels during a hiatus. In the event we need to close for an extended period of time, additional information will be sent to you regarding these activities.

To ensure the safety of our students and community, beginning on Saturday, March 14th through April 14th all school field trips, assemblies, and use of our facilities by outside members will be canceled or, if applicable, postponed. In addition extra-curricular, co-curricular and athletics will be postponed through March 31st. Please note that this is subject to change and we would provide updated information at that time.

Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priority and that we have been taking additional precautions. We will continue to closely adhere to health agency recommendations and monitor updates from the Governor surrounding the Coronavirus; we will keep you informed of any changes to our school schedule. At the present time, our schools will remain open and we will continue to provide our students with high-quality educational programming.

What is coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, some causing illness in people and others circulating among animals, including camels, cats and bats.

The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new virus that causes respiratory illness in people and can spread from person-to-person. This virus was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China.
